Living in the cities has its benefits. In the span of time from last Sunday to today (Saturday), I only drove my car 3-4 times. I biked 320 miles in a bit under 20 hours; a mix of errands, commuting, and solo road rides. I commuted to work 4 out of 5 days, including the shitty rainy days.
I rode a lot on my fixed gear. It's been a real long time since I had that out. It makes a decent commuting and city bike since I can lock it and not worry about it. The gearing is a bit stiff to be enjoyable at lower speeds, but it's not like I am throwing my back out to get it moving. Maybe I'll throw a 17T freewheel on it and have a spinny 'downtown' bike.
I'd like to be able to ride in 5 days a week, but there is usually some logistical snag. Right now I am working mornings in Edina and afternoons in Plymouth. Most days I have a co-worker driving between offices over lunch, so I can throw a bike in the back. Other days I gotta suck it up and drive to work.
I've been feeling like drivers are out to hit me. I had a few close calls this week, including a near left-hook. I was in a bike lane in the center of Hennepin, and this old couple who was immediately to my right took a left into me (no signal of course). I went left with them; and proceeded to throw my arms up, wave, motioned for them to roll down there windows, etc. They freaked out and locked the doors. The old couple had NO idea what they did. It was pretty frustrating for me. Last summer one of my friends got hit in the same spot by a car doing the exact same thing.
