I loathed indoor riding before. Last season, I put maybe 15 hours on the rollers. I chose to harden up, and head outside for my rides. I ended up with a ton of base mileage, which worked just fine for the road season.
This season, I am trying a different approach. I have been throwing trainer and roller rides into the mix the last 3 weeks or so. I find that with a structured ride, riding indoors is tolerable... actually it's not bad at all. I've been getting geeky and programming everything into my Garmin. I follow the screen, and boom it's done before you know it. Then I sit down and post-process.
The best part about indoor cycling is having a controlled environment to really monitor progress. I always had trouble getting longer intervals in on the road, especially at night. You never knew what was around the next corner. I found it to be frustrating, having to stop or slow down halfway through an effort for traffic.
Anyhow, approaching a winter of indoor training with some goals and a means to track progress helps me a lot. And I'm sure I'll start next season in better form because of it.
